Math Teaching that Aligns with my Vision
Example of My Math Teaching Approaches:
1. Jeopardy

Overview of Approach
This Jeopardy lesson is one of the ways in which I incorporated technology into my math lessons. I use technology in the classroom as a tool to support their development in mathematical communication by implementing mathematical terms in the games. Specifically, I do this by creating a game, such as this Jeopardy game, or facilitating games provided my the Decimals online textbook. So for example, in this unit the term exponential notation was essential to understand and to review their understanding of the term I incorporated it in the game.

Connection to Math Concepts
I believe that it is crucial to ensure that the technology is being use to support students understanding of targeted content goals. So, when I incorporate technology in the classroom, I ensure it connects to my content goals of the unit or lesson. For this lesson, as it was a general review before the test. Questions that were on it to targeted to our content goals of understanding what exponential notation uses exponents to represent a number, how to write numbers in exponential notation, and using powers of 10.
Connection to my Math Vision
My approach of incorporating technology into my math lessons connects to my vision of teaching mathematics in different ways. The use of technology has helped me in incorporating mathematical language to support their communication skills. Specifically, when I am creating a game with questions, I use mathematical terms that students should be using. This strategy reinforces them using the terms and allows for opportunities to review what the term means to further develop their understanding.

2. Base-Ten Blocks

Overview of Approach
While teaching mathematics with younger students I frequently use manipulatives in my teaching such as base ten blocks. Using base ten blocks is extremely helpful to use in the classroom when teaching students about number sense. They can be used when teaching a variety of topics in number sense as they provide visual representation for numbers. It is incredibly useful to have these physical tools to use while teaching a topic, or to provide for students while they are working in group or individually.

Connection to Math Concepts
There are numerous uses for base ten blocks in the classroom for a wide variety of mathematical concepts students learn. In my experience with Grade 2 students, base ten blocks were extremely helpful while teaching them about two digit subtraction. The concept of two digit subtraction was confusing for many students as they did not understand the concept of regrouping. However, once we demonstrated with the detachable rods of base ten blocks, the students were able to understand the concept.
Connection to my Math Vision
Using manipulatives was extremely helpful in supporting my students to achieve the goals of my vision as a math teacher. Specifically, base ten blocks allowed me to support my students in developing a procedural and conceptual understanding of regrouping. As stated, regrouping is a challenging concept for young students to understand right away. Although students may understand the procedure of subtracting with two-digit numbers, the base ten blocks helped my students understand what regrouping was conceptually.
