Field Experience 3
For my third field placement, I was lucky to be working in two Grade 6 classes with a group of 36 lovely students. Explore this page to learn about the experience.

Implementing Learning and Teaching Situations
While working in a Grade 6 class for 15 weeks, I implemented and facilitated various learning and teaching situations. One of my most successful lessons this semester was teaching students how to write a formal letter with a twist. As we concluded our unit on Indigenous perspectives and Truth and Reconciliation, students wrote a letter to the principal about how the school could work toward reconciliation. This situation is important for me to share because it demonstrates my ability to implement learning situations. Specifically, this lesson took much planning and organizing beforehand in the unit to ensure students had a good foundation of understanding the topic. Moreover, I had to facilitate an engaging lesson for students to learn how to write a formal letter, as most of them had already done so. The letters were lovely to read and are being sent to the principal to read and consider.
Professional Development
Early on in my Grade 6 class, I was navigating teaching Mathematics for the first time. My lessons were informative, but after getting feedback from the students, my CT and my supervisor, I understood the students needed more excitement in their lessons. With the feedback, I re-developed my lessons to make them more engaging which ultimately led me to create my students’ favourite lessons. The lesson was a math review Jeopardy game we played in class. The categories were associated with different chapters in their math unit, and students participated in small groups to play the game. The students could study for their math tests while having loads of fun.

Being Actively Involved as a Member of the School Team
These last 15 weeks, not only did I work with so many amazing students, I was lucky enough to work alongside an amazing staff that welcomed me into the school with open arms. This semester, I was able to participate in school events and attend field trips. I also participated and led several clubs including the Math Club, Yearbook Club, and Mindfulness Club. These experiences are important for me to share as it demonstrates my ability to be involved in the school community, working alongside a variety of staff and students. One of the most fulfilling experiences I had, was working with my Grade 6 class at the Halloween bake sale. I taught students about selling and handling food, as it was the first time they were selling anything. It was a fun learning experience for them, and it was nice to spend time with the students at the Halloween party. Other activities I participated in at the school include a Walkathon up Mount Royal, apple picking, and a trip to Upper Canada Village.
Mobilizing Digital Technologies
Technology is a wonderful tool that teachers should take advantage of in all classrooms today. Students may be on screens too much at home; however, there are countless educational ways to incorporate digital technologies in the school. I want to share my experiences and resources to display my ability to incorporate technology in the classroom. A specific example of a tool in my classroom is Google Translate which is always on hand for my students learning English as a second or third language. Also, Kahoot and Jeopardy are fun game websites that I frequently use for activities with the students. Moreover, presentations and videos are always used in my class to support different learning styles. As it started to get cold, of my favourite things to do while the students were working was play some Charlie Brown winter music in the background. They found it helped them focus more, and it was relaxing for me as well; a win-win!
