My Vision as a Math Teacher.

Back to School

My goals for students' learning in mathematics:

  • I want my students to develop their mathematical communication skills to support them while investigating new mathematical ideas.

  • I want my students to learn to develop sense-making skills to reason why mathematical ideas are true.

  • I want my students to develop procedural and conceptual understandings of mathematical ideas.

How I will support my students' in achieving these goals:

  • I will differentiate my mathematical teaching and assessment by modifying instruction according to my students’ individual needs to support all types of communication. Differentiation in my classroom will include the use of parallel tasks and open questions to allow for different access points to a solution.

  • I will provide opportunities for students to engage with definitional reasoning to support students in developing both procedural and conceptual understandings of mathematical ideas and properties of objects or functions.

  • I will orchestrate discussions and carefully sequence solutions to allow for students to share key ideas, compare, and contrast them to give way for the development of critical language.

  • I will carefully plan out the launch of a task to highlight key contextual features and mathematical ideas needed for both procedural and conceptual understanding required for the solution.
